FreeBSD Custom XFCE - 8.0-RELEASE README ======================================== Welcome to the 2nd custom 32bit XFCE iso for FreeBSD 8.0-RELEASE! This DVD image is based on 8.0-RELEASE-p2 and contains a custom set of packages intended for desktop usage. It also includes the latest security fixes of the base system. The installation has received limited testing on a VMware setup. Please read this entire file for special installation instructions. This release includes a large selection of packages, like openoffice, abiword/gnumeric, inkscape, gimp, evince, firefox35, thunderbird, xorg, xfce4, avant-window-navigator and others. The options used to compile the ports are included in the file options-i386-xfce-08012010.tar.gz. You may download this file from the following location: http://freebsd.dev-urandom.com/iso/i386/xfce-desktop/options-i386-xfce-08012010.tar.gz Recommended Installation ======================== Install as a standard FreeBSD system. A few notes: - "Standard install" is recommended. From the "Select Distributions" dialog, select "Custom" and install the needed sets. Profiled libraries are not needed for most people. Everything else may be installed, but see the important note below - The Doc distribution (FreeBSD Documentation) is available. Just select the required languages (packages for all languages are available on the DVD) - The installer no longer asks whether you wish to install "Linux Binary Compatibility" - As usual you can install any (and even all) packages supplied as there are no conflicts between them NOTE: During the initial installation of packages, "linux_base" will not get installed, even if it is selected. The same applies also to linux-* packages and others that depend on them (i.e. nspluginwrapper) The installer does not load the "linux.ko" module into the kernel, and the package does not install without it. Please install "linux_base" and any other linux related packages after the initial installation using the following method: - Load the linux.ko module: kldload linux - Add the following line to /etc/rc.conf: linux_enable="YES" - Insert the DVD into the drive and: mount /cdrom cd /cdrom/packages/All pkg_add linux_base-f10-10_2.tbz Alternatively, if you still wish to install linux-* packages during setup, press ALT+F4 at the package selection screen and type the following at the Emergency Holographic Shell: kldload linux Press ALT+F1 to return to you installation screen. You may then select linux_base and any other linux-* packages. Do not forget to set the rc.conf variable described above, after installation is complete. Also note that gnash is not included in this release. Lately, the Linux version of the flash plugin has been performing very well and I suggest you install this for the best experience. Please follow the instructions in the updated section of the FreeBSD Handbook: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/desktop-browsers.html Please provide feedback so this effort can be improved!
